ISO-certifikatet stärker Carboreals position på marknaden för koldioxidbindning.

Carboreal’s ISO certification covers carbon dioxide calculation, monitoring, reporting, and the sales process.

In July, Carboreal’s afforestation projects were awarded the ISO 14064-2 certification.

The certification is an internationally recognized quality standard for companies working with greenhouse gas emissions and emission reductions, making it highly suitable for the voluntary carbon sequestration market.

Carboreal’s ISO certification covers carbon dioxide calculation, monitoring, reporting, and the sales process. The projects create new, additional, and diverse Nordic forests on former agricultural land, ensuring the long-term carbon sequestration of the projects.

Kiwa is a leading global certification body. Kiwa Certification Ltd, an accredited certification body in Finland, has granted Carboreal an official carbon sequestration certificate.

A long process behind us.

Carboreal’s operations have previously been reviewed by an independent third party. However, we wanted to further strengthen our credibility and demonstrate the quality of our operations with an ISO certification from a respected certification body.

Our certification process took over a year in total and was particularly thorough during its most active nine-month phase.

During the process, we reviewed, among other things, the scientific foundation of Carboreal’s operations as well as various calculations, methodologies, and systems. At the same time, we were able to critically assess the quality of our operations and our operating models. The certification also included inspection visits to our afforestation sites, further highlighting the scope of the process.

For our customers, the certification provides additional assurance that we operate in accordance with our promises and principles.

“ISO certification is an important milestone for Carboreal on its journey towards international markets. While no single certification directly removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, third-party verification is an important demonstration of the transparency and reliability of our operations,” says Salomo Vilén, CEO of Carboreal Oy.

Enormous export potential in the global market.

In just a few years, Carboreal has achieved market leadership in the voluntary carbon sequestration sector in Finland, both in terms of revenue and production volumes.

There is still significant growth potential in the domestic market, as Finnish companies have begun to support climate projects and minimize their own emissions. The government also needs to take more climate action to meet its targets. There are no silver bullets, but for example, the national implementation of the CRCF regulation related to carbon sequestration would be an important step toward achieving climate goals.

However, the company’s focus is on international markets. Janne Saarikko, Chairman of Carboreal’s Board, former investment banker, and serial entrepreneur, sees enormous export potential for Finland in the carbon sequestration market:“The voluntary carbon sequestration market is expected to grow rapidly, reaching a market size of hundreds of billions of euros by 2040. Finland’s export potential in this market could be around €2–3 billion per year, which is, of course, a significant amount, but realizing it requires swift action. We work every day to ensure that both Carboreal and Finland can benefit from this market. However, this requires sufficient growth and securing a position as an international market leader.”

The carbon sequestration market is still in its early stages of growth, and certification is not the endpoint, but rather a step forward on the journey toward a cleaner climate. Carboreal continues its path toward global market leadership.
