The growing season is finally here after one of the longest winters in history. The climate is changing, and Finland's winters are getting colder.
The planting of carbon sinks ended exceptionally early last autumn, as the ground started to dry out in early October, even in central Finland. It took until mid-May for the ground to thaw enough to allow plowing of the planting beds to start again.
Carboreal aims to minimise the soil treatment during planting to ensure the good survival of the seedlings. This is why the company has a unique, purpose-built plow that leaves about 3/4 of the land untouched. When the plantation beds are plowed, a boron fertiliser is also applied to ensure the initial development of the seedlings.
Fields are usually deficient in boron when the use changes from arable crops to forest. The nutrient requirements of plants vary greatly depending on what is being grown, so it is important to ensure that the soil has the right nutrients. Only then can we maximise the carbon sink.
In the early stages, grass growth is chemically controlled with conventional arable herbicides as a one-off before planting. Thereafter, no chemical pesticides are used on the sites to maintain excellent biodiversity and soil health.
Carboreal has more than 440 000 seedlings reserved for the spring 2024 planting season, and the target for the autumn is the same number. This amount will sequester even more carbon dioxide than the emissions from the Hanasaari coal-fired power plant!
Carboreal plantings will be concentrated in May-June and September-October. The heat and drought of mid-summer are such a threat to the seedlings that we try to avoid planting in mid-summer. In spring we can plant on practically all soil types, although in some areas it is still advisable to seal the planting beds to prevent excessive drying. However, spring planting will work in almost all areas. In the autumn planting season, we need to be careful about the soil types on which we plant trees. In certain soils, a suitable surface rooting, i.e. rust, can lift the seedling out of the ground, causing it to die. These include certain types of sandy soils. In practice Carboreal's work during the growing season is spread over two seasons, when it is busy, dozens of people are working in the field at the same time.
Now let's just hope for good weather!
