Carboreal and Rautavaara develop a new model for municipal climate action
The cooperation between Carboreal and the Municipality of Rautavaara to create new carbon sinks is progressing at the Tapiola field site, where afforestation work has now been completed. The newly planted forest is part of a broader collaboration aimed at developing new ways for municipalities to contribute to climate action through their land-use opportunities.
Rautavaara has strong potential for establishing new forests and carbon sinks. Alongside the afforestation project, the partners are developing a model that could enable the resulting carbon sinks to support the climate initiatives of other municipalities and cities in the future.
The afforestation of the Tapiola field marks an important step forward in the collaboration. The area has been prepared for planting, and the seedlings have now been established. As the trees grow, a new forest will emerge, capturing carbon and serving as a long-term carbon sink.
The ability of municipalities to create new carbon sinks varies considerably. In densely built urban areas, land suitable for afforestation is often limited, whereas municipalities such as Rautavaara have greater opportunities to establish new forests. Cross-municipal cooperation offers a way to bring together these differing circumstances and resources.
The collaboration with the Municipality of Rautavaara will continue after the afforestation phase. As the new forest begins to grow, Carboreal will further develop its cross-municipal operating model. A key objective is to ensure that the climate benefits generated by these carbon sinks can be allocated clearly and credibly.
-The goal is to find an effective way to connect land areas suitable for creating new carbon sinks with the needs of municipalities and cities whose own opportunities to increase carbon sinks are limited. The afforestation project carried out in Rautavaara represents another important step forward in this work, says Salomo Vilén, CEO of Carboreal.
