Finland's largest football club, HJK, and Carboreal have launched a partnership under which the carbon footprint of HJK's home matches will be compensated through carbon dioxide captured and stored in Finnish forests.
"HJK is a trailblazer in Finnish sports, with an influence that extends far beyond the football pitch. For us, it is meaningful to build a partnership with an organization that wants to lead by example not only in sports but also in sustainability. Together, we can make climate action more visible and bring tangible solutions into people's everyday lives," says Marko Kärkkäinen, CGO at Carboreal.
Carboreal delivers certified carbon removal by planting new, biodiverse forests on former agricultural land that is no longer suitable for cultivation. These forests serve as long-term carbon sinks while enhancing biodiversity and providing new habitats for plants and wildlife.
HJK's home matches bring together tens of thousands of people every year, creating a unique opportunity to raise awareness of climate solutions and encourage others to take action. From Carboreal's perspective, the partnership with HJK represents an important step toward achieving broader societal impact.
"Sport reaches people in a way that few other parts of society can. When sustainability is visible within one of Finland's most recognized sporting communities, climate action becomes more accessible and relatable," Kärkkäinen explains.
The partnership is built on long-term commitment, responsibility, and investing in the future. While HJK is helping shape the future of Finnish football, Carboreal is creating new forests for future generations—forests that will continue to remove and store carbon for decades to come.
Although no single organization can solve the climate crisis alone, meaningful impact can be achieved through collaboration. The partnership between HJK and Carboreal demonstrates how sports organizations, businesses, and communities can work together to contribute to a more sustainable future.
"Together with HJK, we can show that sustainability is not just an aspiration but a series of practical actions with measurable impact. We hope our partnership will inspire other organizations to join climate and nature-positive solutions," Kärkkäinen concludes.
